Arthur Turnure founded Vogue in The United states in 1892 as a weekly publication. Conde Montrose Nast bought Vogue in 1905 and changed it to a bi-weekly publication. He started Vogue overseas after visiting Britain in 1916. Distribution to France, Italy and Spain then followed in 1920. By 1911 the Vogue brand had built the elite reputation it continues to maintain. Three of the current editors are; Anna Wintour (US) Alexandra Shulman (UK) and Emmenuelle Alt (France).
The primary target audience for Vogue is women aged 35-45 with the average reader being 37.9 years old. Therefore advertisements tend to be for luxury brands and articles about lifestyle. They also tend not to feature up and coming acts. Vogue also tends to feature people who have made significant achievements in their field. For example they have featured Adele, first female in the history of the Billboard hot 100 to have three simultaneous top 10 singles as a lead artist, six time grammy award winner and won an academy award for 'best original song'. Jennifer Lawrence, second youngest academy award winner, highest grossing action heroine of all time and body confidence activist. And Michelle Obama the first African-American first lady.
The covers tend to be more beauty based than editorial. The hair, clothes and make-up are all very wearable and props are minimal if used at all. Shots also look to be studio based due to the plain backdrop rather than shot on location. The shots also tend to be fairly close-up allowing hair and make-up to dominate a lot of the look.
